Many firms–especially small and medium-sized ones–need to hire managers and employees with highly specialized skills. However, frequently, executives may not possess the necessary skills or training to properly screen or evaluate candidates for their technical knowledge. Executives also do not have the time to go through rounds of interviews with a candidate, only to determine towards the end of the process that the person’s skill set is insufficient.

For small-to-medium-sized organizations, hiring associates with broader and integrated subject matter expertise is especially important. That’s because, in those organizations, no successful employee can work in isolation. Besides having deep knowledge in their own field, they must also have broad knowledge across areas and departments or be extremely curious.
